William's Story
Left in 1950 to enter military service during Korean Police Action. Serving in the USN Medical Department as a Hospital Corpsman at USNH NNMC Bethesda Md where I became a surgical nurse (technician) scrubbing in the OB GYN, Neuro.,Orthropedic, Cardiac and Reconstructive Surgical Specialties.. Married the love of my life, Mildred Lois Behr. (Millie and I will celebrate our 63 anniversary , Deo Volente , this December) Transferred to Quantico Marine Base followed by service aboard USS ALSHAIN AKA 55 and USS FREMONT APA 44 in the US ATLANTIC AMPHIBIOUS FLEET before concluding my four year tour as HM2C at USNAB, Little Creek, Va. attached to Naval Beach Group 2 , a UDT medical support unit, which subsequently evolved into what we now know as the USN Seals.After graduating from William and Mary and attending the Cornell Hotel School, I managed the Hotel Commodore Maury Hotel in Norfolk where Arthur Treacher, Mary Martin, Tyrone Power,Pat Boone, Arthur Fiedler(with the entire Pops),Gen. following service as a Vice President and Director of Training at the Life Underwriter Training Council in Washington D.C.Millie and I then moved to Colonial Williamsburg where I voluntered for 9 years in the Photographic Department producing images of artifacts, paintings and other objects in the vast collection of the Foundation, where I worked with two outstanding career photographers.. Hans and Craig .Millie and I raised three sons, now having 6 grandchildren. We moved to the Shenandoah Valley 8 years ago to be close to our youngest son Gregg and his family. The bottom line here is simply this: The Creator and Sustainer of the Universe has been most gracious to our family and while we have failed many times over our 18 geographic moves, he continues to bless us in more ways than we could say.This includes being raised in a Christian home and receiving fine educational preparation in Kenosha at MD Bradford and elsewhere. My High School Diploma arrived recently courtesy of the local school board. I am absolutely certain this is much more than anyone wishes to know but now it is out there for any interested surfers.
